Sometimes it is a matter of virtue not being a hero but to sacrifice something or oneself. The English makes a distinction of sacrifice and victim, which differentiation in German is not given. I guess there is a connection between bringing of sacrifice and not-becoming a victim.

For example the child gives away a very fine little teddy-bear in order to enjoy an other child for what ever. Praise as much as tenable such graceful gesture!
